Urias (2004 ) discusses the challenges the clergy go through in their ministry. He tries to show that the work of a pastor is quite involving and hence takes a lot of devotion. Urias (2004) argues that , pastoral work is done in various contexts including hospitals, homes , institutions that provide long term care for the old as well as the terminally ill , funerals, prisons/jails and the clergy’s office as well. Pastors though ought to be comfortable in all these settings in order to develop a Christ centered relationship. For the pastor to be comfortable , he/she should be familiar with the various settings. Getting familiar with some of these settings is though difficult given that they can be frightening and intimidating . For example , securing the freedom of a parishioner who has been jailed at night is no easy undertaking . Planning the funeral of a member of the ministry who commits suicide is equally challenging . (Urias, 2004).
In hospitals pastors visit sick patients after being hospitalized especially their church members on being informed. Here, they pray for them so as to recover soon. This is done in most hospitals and it therefore falls as a responsibility for most pastors. Some pastors also put up hospitals to offer medical services to the community. This way they are considerate to their community’s health. ( Urias 2004)
Pastors not only pray for the sick in hospitals, but also take care of their patients needs . For instance some patients lack money to pay for their bills. In such situations , pastors take such initiatives and do so. This is usually a challenging task for many pastors .
Urias (2004) talks of pastors being great participants in most burial ceremonies. This is especially for their church members who have died after being hospitalized. This posses a great challenge to most pastors especially to convince people who have been praying together with him that it is God’s will.
Pastors also play major roles in most nursing homes(places that provide living quarters for the chronically ill and elderly while caring for them. ) similarly, pastors pray for patients in these nursing homes and cater for their needs to their levels of their abilities. This brings joy, comfort , peace and companionship to these people especially to the forgotten. To some extend, pastors also offer some spiritual teachings, church services, bible studies and also the partaking of the holy communion to the people in most nursing homes. ( Urias 2004)
Pastor’s visit in most nursing homes is very important as this curtails their loneliness by offering companionship and togetherness in a fellowship. The love of Christ is shown to these people through pastor’s actions and are therefore assured of eternal destiny once taught about it. Urias (2004) points out that pastors offer spiritual guidance and counseling to the people in most nursing homes.
It is clear that pastors have great deal of work to perform as part of their ministry starting from Monday through Saturday especially to the sick, old, and deserted people . This offers the people emotional, physical , spiritual and material support and therefore the people regain their self esteem and feel less deserted.
