Essentially, the acquired needs theory posits that needs are shaped over time by our day-to-day experiences. There are three aspects of motivational needs and they include authority, achievement and affiliation. The theory is also referred to as the Learned Need Theory or Three-Need Theory. The achievers seek to stand out; therefore, they appreciate frequent acknowledgment of how well they are doing. Most of the individuals in this category avoid low risk actions and activities with little or no potential gains.

They also avoid the high-risk activities with very high potentials of failure.  Affiliation seekers always seek to build very harmonious relationships with other individuals. Subsequently, they tend to conform and shy away from standing out amongst their colleagues, but they seek approval rather than recognition.  Finally, the power seekers always seek power either to enable them to achieve higher goals or to enable them control other individuals. In most instances, they don’t seek any recognition or approval from other. The primary aim of this research paper is to provide a detailed analysis of how the Texas Youth Commission applies the three needs theory. 

The Texas Youth Commission employs the acquired needs theory with special emphasis on the affiliation category. The commission’s main objective is to provide juvenile correctional facilities by collaborating with families, youth and communities to provide and secure and safe environment where the youth is the commission care receive specialized and individualized treatment, education, employment training and life skills and relevant models to promote community reintegration. The commission also sets various group activities for the juveniles under its care. Affiliation, aims to create meaningful and significant social contact, and the commission achieves this by allowing he juvenile delinquents to engage in various community-based activities thus they are able to make friends.

Additionally, these community activities encourage and influence them to participate and get involved in various activities. In most instances, the juveniles may use the community groups to conform or shy away, however, through the commission the juveniles are often encouraged to take active part and interact in the different community groups to make them realize that their actions are approved and appreciated. Indeed, the strategies being used by the commission are bearing the desired results because it has been able to rehabilitate and integrate a considerable number of youths back into the society.
